This publication represents the largest LTC commitment
to an application note to date. No other application note
absorbed as much effort, took so long or cost so much.
This level of activity is justified by our belief that high speed
monolithic amplifiers greatly interest users.
Historically, monolithic amplifiers have represented packets of inexpensive, precise and controllable gain. They
have partially freed engineers from the constraints and
frustrations of device level design. Monolithic operational
amplifiers have been the key to practical implementation
of high level analog functions. As good as they are, one
missing element in these devices has been speed.
Devices presently coming to market are addressing monolithic amplifiersвЂ™ lack of speed. They bring with them the
ease of use and inherent flexibility of op amps. When Philbrick Researches introduced the first mass produced
op amp in the 1950вЂ™s (K2-W) they knew it would be used.
What they couldnвЂ™t possibly know was just how widely,
and how many different types of applications there were.
As good a deal as the K2-W was (I paid $24.00 for mine or rather, my father did), monolithic devices are far better.

INTRODUCTION
Even in a time of rapidly advancing digital image processing, analog video signal processing still remains eminently
viable. The video A/D converters need a supply of properly
ampliп¬Ѓed, limited, DC restored, clamped, clipped, contoured, multiplexed, faded and п¬Ѓltered analog video before
they can accomplish anything. After the digital magic is
performed, there is usually more amplifying and п¬Ѓltering
to do as an adjunct to the D/A conversion process, not to mention all those pesky cables to drive. The analog way
is often the most expedient and efп¬Ѓcient, and you donвЂ™t
have to write all that code.
The foregoing is only partly in jest. The experienced engineer
will use whatever method will properly get the job done;
analog, digital or magic (more realistically, a combination
of all three). Presented here is a collection of analog video

The LTВ®1190 is a family of high speed ampliп¬Ѓers optimized for video performance on В±5V or single +5V
supplies. The family includes three voltage feedback op
amps and two video difference ampliп¬Ѓers. All ampliп¬Ѓers
slew at 450V/Ојs, and deliver В±50mA output current for
driving cables. The LT1193 video difference ampliп¬Ѓer
features uncommitted high input impedance (+) and
(вЂ“) inputs, and can be used in differential or single-ended
conп¬Ѓgurations. In addition, the LT1193 has an adjustable
gain of two or greater, with a вЂ“3dB bandwidth of 80MHz.
Wideband Voltage Controlled Ampliп¬Ѓer
The LT1193 video difference ampliп¬Ѓer combined with an
MC1496 balanced modulator make a low cost 50MHz
Voltage Controlled Ampliп¬Ѓer (VCA), shown in FigureВ 1.
The input signal of the MC1496 at pin 1 is multiplied
by the Control Voltage on Pin 10, and appears as a
differential output current at Pins 6 and 12. The LT1193
acts to level shift the differential signal and convert it
to a single-ended output. Resistor RB is used to set the
bias current in the MC1496 to 1mA in each 200О© RL,
while RCM is used to shift the differential output into …

Introduction
This note shows how to make several different video
circuits using high speed op amps. All of these circuits
work with composite, RGB and monochrome video.
For best results, bypass the power supply pins of
these ampliп¬Ѓers with 1ОјF to 10ОјF tantalum capacitors
in parallel with 0.01ОјF disc capacitors. It is important
to terminate both ends of video cables to preserve
frequency response. When properly terminated, the
cable looks like a resistive load of 150О©.
Lots of Inputs Video MUX Cable Driver (LT1227) Multiplex Ampliп¬Ѓers
Often it is desirable to select one of several signals to
send down a cable. Connecting the outputs of several
ampliп¬Ѓers together and using the ampliп¬ЃerвЂ™s shutdown
pin to disable all but one accomplishes this goal. The
LTВ®1190, LT1191, LT1192, and LT1193 are shutdown by
pulling pin 5 to the negative supply.
The LT1223 and LT1227 current feedback ampliп¬Ѓers are
shutdown by pulling Pin 8 to ground. During normal
operation Pin 8 is open and at the positive supply potential. An easy way to interface Pin 8 to logic is with
a logic level N-channel FET or a 74C906 (open-drain …

It is now possible to send and receive color composite video signals appreciable distances on a low cost
twisted-pair. This technique is similar to the push toward
twisted-pair cables in EtherNet systems to replace
costly coaxial cable connections. The cost advantage of
these techniques is signiп¬Ѓcant. Standard 75О© RG-59/U
coaxial cable costs between 25Вў and 50Вў per foot, but
a PVC twisted-pair is only pennies per foot. This means
hundreds of dollars are saved in installations as short
as 1000 feet, easily paying for additional electronics.
The system also provides for вЂњdropsвЂќ or receiver taps
along the twisted-pair. This bidirectional вЂњvideo busвЂќ consists of the low cost
LTВ®1190 op amp and the LT1193 video difference ampliп¬Ѓer shown in Figure 1. A pair of LT1190s at TRANSMITВ 1,
is used to generate differential signals to drive the line
which is back-terminated in its characteristic impedance.
These ampliп¬Ѓers have high 50mA load driving ability,
while maintaining a very high 450V/Ојs slew rate and
50MHz gain-bandwidth. The twisted-pair receiver is an
LT1193 video difference ampliп¬Ѓer at RECEIVE 1, and it
converts signals from differential to single-ended. The
