  Introduction
  Linear Technology offers a variety of devices that simplify
  converting power from a USB cable, but the LTCВ®3455
  represents the highest level of functional integration yet
  achieved. The LTC3455 seamlessly manages power flow
  between an AC adapter, USB cable and Li-ion battery,
  while complying with USB power standards, all from a
  4mm Г— 4mm QFN package. In addtion, two high efficiency
  synchronous buck converters generate low voltage rails
  which most USB-powered peripherals require. The
  LTC3455 also provides power-on reset signals for the
  microprocessor, a Hot SwapTM output for powering
  memory cards as well as an uncommitted gain block
  suitable for use as a low-battery comparator or an LDO
  controller. The PCB real estate required for the entire USB
  power control circuit and two DC/DC converters is only
  225mm2.

  Introduction
  The USB is fast becoming the most popular way to attach peripherals to personal computers. An important
  feature of the USB standard is that it allows for power
  transmission over the USB cable, making it possible for
  a PDA or other handheld device to charge its battery
  while it is connected to a host PC. The charger is based on the LTC4053—a standalone
  timer-terminated constant current/constant voltage
  linear charger. The LTC4053 features a thermal loop
  which maximizes the charging rate under all conditions by regulating the maximum die temperature. Less
  sophisticated linear chargers must run lower charging
  rates or risk overheating, thus increasing charge times. The USB specification defines load current limits that
  USB peripherals can draw from the USB. Three operating modes are allowed: Operation of the LTC4053 is simple. The charge current
  is set by a resistor on the PROG pin, the termination
  timer period is set by a capacitor on the timer pin and
  float voltage is preset at 4.2V. Suspend mode, where the USB peripheral draws

  Introduction
  Increasing numbers of portable devices
  are tapping into the Universal Serial
  Bus (USB) to charge their batteries.
  USB power supplied by the host allows
  batteries to be recharged at the same
  time data transfer is occurring, and in
