  Application Note 87 is the fifth in a series that excerpts useful circuits from Linear Technology magazine. Data conversion, interface and signal conditioning circuits from issue VI:1 (February 1996) through issue VIII:4 (November 1998) are featured. Like its predecessor, AN67, this Application Note includes circuits for high speed video, interface and hot swap circuits, active RC and switched capacitor filter circuitry and a variety of data conversion and instrumentation circuits. All circuits are conveniently indexed by type.

  INTRODUCTION
  Application Note 87 is the fifth in a series that excerpts
  useful circuits from Linear Technology magazine to preserve them for posterity. This application note highlights
  data conversion, interface and signal conditioning circuits
  from issue VI:1 (February 1996) through issue VIII:4
  (November 1998). Like its predecessor, AN67, this Application Note includes circuits for high speed video, interface and hot swap circuits, active RC and switched capacitor filter circuitry and a variety of data conversion and instrumentation circuits. There are also several circuits
  that cannot be so neatly categorized. So, without further
  ado, I’ll let the authors describe their circuits.

  The LTC В®1560-1 is a fully integrated continuous-time filter
  in an SO-8 package. It provides a 5-pole elliptic response
  with a pin selectable cutoff frequency (fC) of 1MHz or
  500kHz. Several features distinguish the LTC1560-1 from
  other commercially available high frequency, continuoustime monolithic filters: response is shown in Figure 2. In the 1MHz mode, the
  passband gain is flat up to (0.55)(fC) with a typical ripple
  of В± 0.2dB, increasing to В±0.3dB for input frequencies up to
  (0.9)(fC). The stopband attenuation is 63dB starting from
  (2.43)(fC) and remains at least 60dB for input frequencies

  response. Figure 3a shows the 2-level eye diagram of the
  filter. The size of the “eye” opening shows that the filter is
  suitable for data communications applications. Additional
  phase equalization can be performed with the help of an
  external dual op amp and a few passive components. This
  is shown in Figure 4, where a 2nd order allpass equalizer
  is cascaded with the IC. The allpass function is achieved
  through traditional techniques, namely, passing a signal
  through a low Q inverting bandpass filter and then performing summation with the appropriate gain factors.
  Figure 3b shows the eye diagram of the equalized filter. The LTC1560-1 delivers accurate fixed cutoff frequencies of 500kHz and 1MHz without the need for internal …

  The need to characterize frequency sources, both in the
  laboratory and in the п¬Ѓeld, is increasingly important. The
  circuit in Figure 1 offers some interesting attributes in
  a compact and relatively inexpensive scheme. It uses
  an LTC В®1420 ADC to undersample a higher frequency,
  driving an LTC1668 DAC, followed by a п¬Ѓlter to perform a
  down conversion. The output of the п¬Ѓlter is subsequently
  resampled to produce a manageable sample rate for a
  single-chip microcontroller. In addition to characterizing
  the carrier in an IF strip or the output of a local oscillator,
  this technique is also useful for characterizing ADCs,
  DACs, clock sources, signal sources or the effects of
  logic devices or phase-locked loops on phase noise.
  Frequency conversion or translation is usually performed by a diode mixer or a Gilbert cell mixer. Down
  conversion is most often encountered in radio receivers;
  up conversion is more commonly used in transmitters. The common superheterodyne receiver usually
  involves one conversion to produce a п¬Ѓxed intermediate
  frequency (IF). Spectrum analyzers, cellular base stations, cable modems, microwave and satellite receivers,
  radar and optical communications systems all include
