  INTRODUCTION
  Sensing and/or controlling current flow is a fundamental requirement in many electronics systems, and the
  techniques to do so are as diverse as the applications
  themselves. This Application Note compiles solutions to
  current sensing problems and organizes the solutions by
  general application type. These circuits have been culled
  from a variety of Linear Technology documents.
  Circuits Organized by General Application
  Each chapter collects together applications that tend to
  solve a similar general problem, such as high side current sensing, or negative supply sensing. The chapters are titled
  accordingly. In this way, the reader has access to many
  possible solutions to a particular problem in one place.
  It is unlikely that any particular circuit shown will exactly
  meet the requirements for a specific design, but the suggestion of many circuit techniques and devices should
  prove useful. To avoid duplication, circuits relevant to
  multiple chapters may appear in one location.

  Introduction
  The LT®1787 high side current sense amplifier provides
  a precision measurement of current into or out of a
  power source. The part generates an output voltage that
  is directly proportional to the current flowing through
  an external current sense resistor. With a miniscule
  40ОјV (typical) input offset voltage, the LT1787 has a
  better than 12-bit, zero-cross accurate dynamic range
  at 250mV full-scale input. A hefty 60V maximum supply
  voltage specification allows the part to be used not only
  in low voltage battery applications but also in higher
  voltage telecom and industrial applications. Independent
  VEE and VBIAS pins make the application of the LT1787
  extremely versatile. Operation with an A/D Converter
  Figure 1 shows a detailed schematic of a high resolution
  (12-bit), bidirectional current-to-bits converter using
  an LT1787, the LT1783 SOT-23 1.2MHz micropower,
  rail-to-rail op amp and the LTC1404 SO-8 packaged,
  12-bit analog-to-digital converter with shutdown. The

  Introduction
  The LT1787 is a precision, high-side
  current sense amplifier designed for
  monitoring of the current either into
  or out of a battery or other element
  capable of sourcing or sinking current. The LT1787 features a miniscule
  40ВµV (typical) input offset voltage with
  a 128mV full-scale input voltage. (The
  part is generally used at В±128mV fullscale, although it is specified for
  500mV minimum full-scale.) This
  translates to a 12-bit dynamic range
  in resolving currents. A hefty 60V
  maximum input voltage specification
  allows the part to be used not only in
  low voltage battery applications but
  also in telecom and industrial applications where higher voltages may be
  present.
  The device is self-powered from the
  supply that it is monitoring and
  requires only 60ВµA of supply current. …
